The Old Town or El Casco Antiguo

The new city of Panama was founded in 1673.

Buildings with spacious balconies, narrow streets with red bricks, centuries-old churches, beautiful ruins, walks and museums, the Old Town or El Casco Antiguo, is today a historic center of tourist and commercial value.
Declared by UNESCO [United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural] Heritage of Humanity, every corner of the Old Town is witnessing a story that marked the rationale of Panamanian forging the identity of the city ​​and Panamanian nationality .
The Old Town was founded in 1673 as the new city of Panama, then arson attacks by pirates this time. It was built with a large wall with fortifications and only two main gates: “La Puerta de Mar” and “La Puerta de Tierra”. Strong fortifications prevented pirate attacks, in 1851 the government decided to dismantle the walls considering that they were no longer needed. Nowadays, a minimun stretch can be appreciated from the Municipal House or Casa de la Municipalidad
In the Old Town there are many sites of interest, where the route is preferable to walk , as they are very close to each other. Founded by Pedro Arias de Davila in 1519, Panama City is located in the province of the same name. There are still some ruins of the first city, which was destroyed by the English Pirate Henry Morgan in 1671.
The city, which confronts the Pacific Ocean, is characterized by lowlands.
As capital, Panama City is the backbone of the economy and culture, with a growing tourism industry.
